Bamburgh Castle

One of Northumbria's most striking castles, Bamburgh has been used in many films. Built on an outcrop of the Whin Sill, it dominates the beautiful village of Bamburgh.

Buried in the churchyard is Grace Darling, a heroine renowned for saving 9 sailors with her father, a lighthouse keeper, from a ship wrecked in a terrific storm in 1838.

Dedicated to St Aidan who died in the village in 654,the church, from where the picture is taken, dates from 635 AD when St. Aidan came to Lindisfarne from Iona. The present building is 13thC. The chancel is said to be the second longest in the country (60ft), and contains magnificent reredos in Caen stone. There is an effigy of Grace Darling in the North Aisle.
