Tyne Bridges

The River Tyne has several bridges which can be seen here. Most are at a high level to allow ships to pass upriver. The Swing Bridge is at the lower level but, as it's name suggests, swings open for ships. Ths is close to the original site of the Roman Bridge which crossed the Tyne.

Just downstream of the Tyne Bridge (the arched one in the distance) is the new Millennium Eye Bridge. This is a footbridge at a low level but opens like an eyelid to allow ships to pass.

The picture is taken from the main railbridge into Newcastle and the bridge in the foreground carries the Metro, Tyneside's passenger transport system.
